God is SO big and we are SO small

The last two days while exercising, I watched Louie Giglio’s DVDs: Indescribable & How Great is Our God. It is amazing to me to hear about and see the immensity of God’s details in the heavens and on earth. In the heavens how BIG the galaxies are. Also to see the incredible detail he puts into our human body. I am always fascinated with science, and this we just another big WOW when I think of God’s detail even in things that need such specialized microscopes and years of research to find what God has done in only a word and a breath!.

Psalm 8: 1, 3 & 4 says: “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens . . . When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?”

God said the word (in Gen 1) and the heavens and earth were formed. In Genesis 2:7 it says, “the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” So just a word and a breath and things came into being.”

God also created man in such a unique way, with all the fine details (check out Psalm 139 if you haven’t lately). But the one part that I learned about today was the complex protein called “Laminin” that is the protein “glue” of our body, that holds it all in place. Uniquely enough it is in the shape of the cross.

Colossians 1:17 says, “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” God uses laminin to hold our bodies together. But it is he himself, and what the cross represents in our lives that holds every part of us together!

Thanks God for being amazing in the heavens and on earth . . . and in me! You are indescribable!

Standing at Iguazu Falls

Poem by Dan Potter

I stand at the edge of one of the most majestic falls in the world.
The water roars down into a white abiss. The grass follows the water and guides it down it’s fall.
The mist creates a rainbow and rushes up to refresh my face.
I look across at rocky clifts which peak at red clay and decend into tall gree grass into the wonder of white.
A bird flies free above it all, no fear of falling. Just able to see what my eye cannot. Without limits it sails from Brazil to Argentina – no stops, no costs, no fear.
Stand as close to the edge as possible and sing “How Great thou Art”.
Art . . . It is all art and I am amazed again, then I walk away.
Not to leave, but to another and another again.
Butterflies ride upon my wrist, an iguana crosses my path, a family of “coo-wah-tea” go from bush to bush.
The rain comes and children dance, my clothes turn cold with the heavy mist.
It blinds the eye, but we could remain here for years and not take it all in.
What a wonderful world!

“I belong” Trees . . . watercolor & ink

Suzie's "I belong" tree in Doris Huntoon's woodsThis week our theme for creative journaling is “I BELONG”. It is a part of the Creation Connection with

God :: Others :: Myself :: Nature

On Monday we sat out in Doris Huntoon’s woods and enjoyed God time there. I started this watercolor painting there as I enjoyed the details of God’s creation. I love the way everything is connected. Today I made the final connections to this piece of God’s art expressed in and through me. I added the pen & ink . . . my first time like this. Connecting the different shapes and textures. Thanks God for an awesome creation connection!

imagiNations . . . “human” theme . . . “I belong”

Dan blazing the trailGiovana, Lisa, Roland, & Facundo off into the woodsWoods scene for painting inspirationThis afternoon we took an imagiNations outing with the focus of the ‘human.” theme. Looking for inspiration in nature and having our processing time and shhh 0.5 time and “Creation Connection” time.

It was awesome to go to Doris Huntoon’s woods and meet God there. We all took our creative supplies (mine was my watercolor supplies) and books and chairs . . . and we took different trails to go have our time. We all came back when Dan blew his yellow horn. I enjoyed hearing about totally different experiences and interpretations that we all had.

I enjoyed this last scene, and spent my time noticing the details: colors, shadows, shapes, perspective, etc as I began the painting.

We are all trying to do a page a day in our “creative journals”, besides our BIG Adventure & Journaling. I do look forward to these daily creative times to process what we are experiencing!

A visit to PETRA in Jordan

DUZIE @ Petra Treasury, from cave across the openingDUZIE posing in one of the caves in Petra
Dan in the commerce section of PetraThe Monastery from on top of the the mountainWalking through the cavernsLife among the sandstone . . . DUZIE & trees! It was an awesome experience to walk through this wonderful ancient site of PETRA. Created by the Nabeateans (some say they are the decendents of the Edomites) so many years ago as a trade center for that part of the world, it was amazing to walk through such history! We walked for 7 hours that day, and only saw a portion of the places. We could have easily spent 3 days + there (and more if we took the time to draw and paint what we were experiencing).

We walked in the gate, along the sandstone walkways with small caves to the left and right, then in to the canyon that led us into the opening that revealed the “SIQ” or the Treasury.  Then we continued walking through wider canyons with awesome carvings all around us, around the corner and into the long Urban Comerce area with steps up to it’s temples, religious sacrifical and ceremonial areas.  Then we had to walk over the bridge covering the aquaduct, and through a modern restaurant to begin the 1 1/2 hour trip up steps and incline and finally around the corner  to reveal the Monastary.  We continued climbing to the highest point to see trails continuing in every direction, and another awesome view of the Monastary.  There is only one way in and one way out of the main areas, so we were able to go back through the same places again, seeing it once again, but from a different view!  WOW . . . We do want to go back!

It reminded us of a combination of the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon . . . all places we went to on our out west trip with our family (including Joshua & Josiah) + the Mero family. God is amazing at the beauty he has created!

We loved that we could just go everywhere, climbing the cliffs, stair steps leading somewhere, or nowhere anymore, into the caves, and on ledges. It was an amazing “playgroud” of sorts.

It was also enlightening to read the history / descriptions before and after and compare what we saw what the purpose and use of those places. A real place in history!

Sunrise over Lexington ~ By Dan Potter

Sunrise over Lexington

(This was written by Dan over the course of an hour or more as he sat in the midst of the sunrise one morning.)

August 3, 2009

(not the final edit)

I sit alone and look for the morning sky.  The darkness has a rip.  It is jagged and cold.  Beyond the blackness of night is a new color or mix of hues.  To the south begins a color a bit bluer than night, but as it blends north is lightens to morning blue and into the north’s deep red.  The darkness above seems to have been stretched too far as patches of light hues seep through.  Everything is still except the leaves awakening and the sailboat’s clanging.  Oh there is the first bird’s call and wait an answer replies.  Bright silence is broken as sea gulls and ducks shake off the morning due.  In the distance a barge, with its bass rumble is heard as it defines where sky and water touch.  The first gull takes flight following the lifting of the darkness.  The rip has grown as the stretch above becomes less opaque.  The deep red of the north moves across my gaze as its shadow begins to match the blue hues of the south.  It seems as if two warring tribes are approaching the center of the battlefield still covered in blood, and as they do everything brightens.  The outline of black trees begin to take on a life of green and the lines ahead now seem to birth formations of rocks, fence, and brush.  Oh now look someone much bigger than I, beyond the north has gripped the corners of the night rug and pulled.  The display is mirroring the slow motion of a theatrical performance about to begin.  Curtain of night moves one to hope at what might be next.  Boats rock with the rhythm of the silent orchestra of bird, leaf and barge.  The tribes of the north and south seemed to have met and become one.  The stretch marks above gave way to a new thickness, like the belly of a blanket.  Wind catches my ear and the wings of birds; a chill either comes or goes.  The pulling of the sky seems to have left strips of last night forming a trail for tomorrow to follow.  Again the wind catches my ear and I turn to see reflection.  Not mine, but the sky has slipped into the water.  What is above is written below.  Same colors now in waves awakened.  Human, I have seen the day’s first human, walking away from the morning’s masterpiece.  As if they never noticed.  The spender seems to shout, “look at me!” but the ears of the man are not caught nor his eye for he never looks back.  The sky responds by commanding the darkness above turn back like the tide.  A beach of blue remains, a beach of blue that is not clouds or anything else besides space.  Was it taking a way what the human missed or was it providing more light in order that the human did not trip on a shadow of time.  Who am I to say?  A third of the sky holds the last bit of night, it seems to cloak a future moment.  A work of art still under canvas builds expectation.  Lines form in the sky’s canvas, accessorize the moment of mystery.  I wait in stillness and light gathers in one point.  A fire grows and shapes the horizon with a sun half grown.  So bright I cannot look yet so beautiful I cannot look away.  The sun rises and rises and begins its journey of light, warmth, life and shadows.  It seems to be lifted by one remaining cloud.  The birds notice and rise higher than I to get a better view.  I do not fly away but wait for the sphere of blinding beauty to give me a better view.  The clouds must love this moment for they paint their every inner edge to match the horizontal fires dance.  The birds join the dance as they form a winged tornado between the sun and me.  The rising light seems to smile as a piece of night falls over its face and then it is gone.  The sunrise hides behind the nightfall and all I can see is outlines of light.  It seems colder during these minutes of exchange.  As I look around, blackness, has thrown colors down, marking every place it slept or marking every place it will return to.  I believe it is now officially morning for more humans are in my view, as they walk dogs, open car doors, survey their boats and wipe the last bit of blackness from there eyes.  The birds circle over the water and scream.  They tell the fish that a new day is just above their ceiling.  Finally the last bit of sky exits the dance floor and the sun is left without a partner.  I squint at the light as I remember only 45 minutes ago I searched for it.  Did I find it or did it find me?  A sea gull laugh’s, I guess it was a silly question.  Must go now, my day is upon me.

Daisies!

Short Daisies in bloomIt is a shame that in my busyness I almost don’t have time to enjoy the flowers in our garden.  The Daisies are in bloom, along with other coneflowers. These are my favorite flowers in this season of summer!  So fun to see and enjoy them, even in the busyness of Hospice work and DUZIE events!

Where do your ROOTS grow?

roots-by-the-waterWe have been memorizing and meditating on Psalm 1 about having our tree growing by fresh flowing water.  The lyrics of this song I just heard this morning by Shawn McDonald from the song called “Roots” is quite good. Where do your roots grow?

I’ve heard it said that a wise man
Does not live on bread alone
But off the everlasting words
Dripping from the Almighty’s tongue

And I’ve heard it said that a wise man
Does not look himself in the mirror
Then turn away and walk
Forgetting what he looks like standing there

Oh, men like these
They are just like trees
Planted near streams of water
With roots that grow
Deep, deep into the ground

I’ve heard it said that a wise man
Ignores the call from the corner
Even with her seductive eyes
He turns away, he doesn’t listen to her lies

And oh, men like these
They are just like trees
Planted near streams of water
With roots that grow
Deep, deep into the ground

Into the ground
Into the ground
Into the ground

Into the ground
Into the ground
Into the ground

And oh, men like these
They are just like trees
Planted near streams of water
With roots that grow
Deep, deep into the ground

Into the ground
Into the ground
Into the ground

Into the ground
Into the ground
Into the ground

Poison Ivy: the Lust Itch

(This itch is something we have been dealing with for about 10 days now . . . an interesting thought by Dan connecting Poison Ivy and Lust!)

poison-ivy-rashBy Dan of DUZIE

To whom it may concern:

Have you ever had poison ivy? Those little red spots that grow into big red spots, that itch so bad that you want to rip your skin off? Little red spots, that come from little green plants that you may have laid upon while playing a game in the woods? I have, and as I type this, my arms are covered with large red spots which are covered with white cream which does nothing except remind me of where I am not to itch!

For 12 days I have had one uncontrollable desire, and that is to ITCH. Everyone tells me “Don’t Itch,” but nothing feels better . . . for the moment.

poison-ivy-plant“Poison Ivy” reminds me so much of Lust! You know, that stuff you got into your brain by playing a game. It may be “Lust of the Eye”, which is a desire to posses a skill, look or property of another, or “Lust of the Flesh”, which is a desire to posses a moment of personal pleasure.

It starts by lying upon a moment, being careless, exposing your skin to the poison of lust. The moment passes, and then a little red spot creates an itch that whispers, “I want”. The lust grows and begins shouting at you. You try to hide it, but your day begins to be one long fight to not itch. You finally talk to a close friend or go to the doctor. They give advice and perhaps a shot, but not one can take it away. You pray for your red spots to stop tormenting you, but nothing stops the poison.

A moment of time started the process and many moments of time will bring the itch to rest, so I’m told. I must now stay out of the woods, covered in white cream, getting support and advice from those who have been there and NO ITCHING! Oh they also say once I’ve been infected . . . I will always need to be careful in the woods!

So much like lust.

I think it’s easier to tell people not to itch their lust, rather than tell them to stay out of the woods where lust stings. We live surrounded by little “innocent” green plants. Perhaps this is why the first thing God said to man, in the first garden (Genesis 2:16-17) was, “YOU ARE FREE to eat from any tree . . . but YOU MUST NOT EAT” of one tree! For when you eat of it YOU WILL SURELY DIE!”

I am free to go into any woods and lay upon any little green leaf, I might find. But if I, or if you do, there is some kind of itch that leads to death that is birthed.

To whom it may concern:

Be wise, Be careful, Be ITCH-less and FREE!
